“Oh Lord, I feel so unnecessary.” My dad spoke this phrase from time to time. It spilled out of my mouth today, too. We have those times, don’t we? Moments we forget our worth? So, let’s take a moment to examine the truth.
Peter reminded Christians from the first century just as he reminds us, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9).
He isn’t saying you worked hard, paid your dues, and feel worthy so I’m going to love you. No. He said we are chosen, royal, holy and we belong because of Jesus. God called us into it. Jesus did what’s necessary to bring people into God’s light and His peace.
So, every time you and I feel unworthy, we can humbly declare, “Oh Lord, you are so necessary.” Thank you for calling us out of the darkness. Thanks for graciously loving us and for giving us a place to belong. We are yours. What’s better than that?
